Experts with a Sharp Eye for Understanding Viruses

The epidemic in Shanghai has touched people’s hearts. In order to accurately grasp the number of positive infections, nucleic acid testing is a key move. On April 15, the reporter came to two nucleic acid testing laboratories in Shanghai Pudong New Area to find out.

Dean Air Membrane Laboratory is located in Nanhui Sports Center, Pudong New Area, in the gymnasium. “We started receiving samples at 7:00 in the morning. We received more than 30 batches in the morning, and the same amount in the afternoon.” At the sample receiving point of the laboratory, Hu Tao from Shanghai De’an Distribution Service Department and his team members are receiving samples. Samples from various sites in Pudong New Area.

At the laboratory site, technician Liu Guopeng is reviewing the amplification results and releasing the report. He must compare at least three times carefully to ensure the accuracy of the test results.

On the open space of Caolu Sports Center in Pudong New Area, white containers are eye-catching. This is the mobile PCR square cabin laboratory of Shanghai Nuzi Huaxi Medical Laboratory Co., Ltd. There are 9 units in total, each 51 square meters in size, divided into reagent preparation area, specimen preparation area, amplification analysis area and high pressure disinfection area.

The reporter saw that the nuclear Huaxi inspection staff are busy carrying out nucleic acid testing of samples. From specimen reception, information verification, specimen numbering, nucleic acid extraction, amplification analysis, to result interpretation, and uploading of results… As the closest people to the virus, they used their “sharp eyes” to provide strong support for Shanghai’s epidemic prevention and control.

According to He Wei, the director of the Nuzi Huaxi Fangcang Cabin Laboratory, the company adopts the gene amplification method to complete one-stop nucleic acid detection, thereby greatly improving the detection efficiency and effectively responding to the detection needs of large-scale people. “It only takes 3 hours from receiving the sample to the test result.” He Wei said that in the past 30 days, both the Nuclear Huaxi Fengxian Laboratory and the Nuclear Huaxi Pu Oriental Cabin Laboratory have conducted nucleic acid testing 24 hours a day. The shift system is adopted, and the maximum daily inspection volume can reach 400,000 tubes.
