Description
Livmarli (maralixibat) is a prescription medicine used to treat cholestatic pruritus (itch) in patients with Alagille syndrome 3 months of age and older. Alagille syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects the liver, heart, and other organs. Cholestatic pruritus is a common symptom of Alagille syndrome and is caused by a buildup of bile acids in the blood.
Drug class
Livmarli is an ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT) inhibitor. IBAT is a protein in the intestines that helps to reabsorb bile acids. By inhibiting IBAT, Livmarli reduces the reabsorption of bile acids and increases their excretion in the feces. This helps to lower the levels of bile acids in the blood and relieve cholestatic pruritus.
Indications
Livmarli is indicated for the treatment of cholestatic pruritus in patients with Alagille syndrome 3 months of age and older.
Mechanism of action
Livmarli works by inhibiting the ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT).
Dosage and administration
Livmarli is taken orally, once daily. The starting dose depends on the patient’s weight and is adjusted based on the patient’s response to treatment.
Effectiveness
In clinical trials, Livmarli was shown to be effective in reducing cholestatic pruritus in patients with Alagille syndrome. In one study, 82% of patients treated with Livmarli experienced a reduction in pruritus severity by at least 70%.
Side effects
The most common side effects of Livmarli are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Other side effects may include vomiting, fatigue, and headache.
Contraindications
Livmarli is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to maralixibat or any of the other ingredients in Livmarli.
Additional information
Livmarli is a relatively new medication, but it has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment for cholestatic pruritus in patients with Alagille syndrome. It is generally well-tolerated, with most side effects being mild and manageable.
