Description
Palynziq (pegvaliase-pqpz) is a prescription medicine used to treat phenylketonuria (PKU) in adults who have uncontrolled blood phenylalanine levels on existing management. PKU is a genetic disorder that causes the body to not be able to break down the amino acid phenylalanine. This can lead to a buildup of phenylalanine in the blood and brain, which can cause serious health problems, including intellectual disability.
Uses
Palynziq is used to treat adults with PKU who have uncontrolled blood phenylalanine levels on existing management. Existing management may include diet, phenylalanine-restricted medical foods, and large neutral amino acids (LNAAs).
How to Use
Palynziq is administered as a subcutaneous injection once daily. The starting dose is 20 mg. The dose may be increased to 40 mg or 60 mg once daily, depending on the patient’s response.
Dosage
The recommended starting dose of Palynziq is 20 mg administered as a single subcutaneous injection once daily. The dose may be increased to 40 mg or 60 mg once daily, depending on the patient’s response.
Mechanism of Action
Palynziq is a phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) enzyme. PAL is the enzyme that breaks down phenylalanine in the body. Palynziq works by replacing the missing or deficient PAL enzyme in people with PKU. This helps to lower blood phenylalanine levels.
Storage Conditions
Palynziq should be stored in the refrigerator (2-8°C or 36-46°F) in its original carton to protect from light. Do not freeze.
